Tips on using GPS and GPS files

E-mail Print PDF

Here are some pointers on using these files if you are new to GPS navigation.

  • A must have software tool is GPSBabel. It will convert all manner of files from one format to another. Download it here.
  • On most of my pages where there is a GPS file I will have a link to download the plot/rout etc. (If I don't Contact me and ley me know and include the page URL if you can.
  • If I was to suggest mapping software I would recommend OziExplorer. It will allow you to use pretty much any maps, including scanned paper maps that you have and import any plot/route/waypoint data too. You can buy it here. Good Auzzie product and it runs on Windows on your PC/Laptop AND on you windows CE/Mobile device too. That included most GPS receivers and PDA and phones that run windows.
  • As I mentioned above, MOST GPS receivers like Navman, TomTom etc actually are just PDA's running Windows mobile. You can easily and safely crack them so that you get access to the underlying Windows OS and can run all manner of software like MP3 and MP4 players, Calendars and any other things that come on a PDA. After you do this you can run a other great piece of FREE software called MIOPocket, see below.
  • Lots of info here for bike related setup.
  • A great 'FrontEnd" or interface for using multiple apps on a CE device is MioPocket.
  • If your KML files are on a web server that is public, you can paste the URL to the KML file into GoogleMaps and it will plot the file on the map for you.
  • If you have a Google directions route all planned on the googlw maps site, click the "Link" link and paste that into here:

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map_input?form=googleearth

where it says "Or provide the URL of data on the Web:" it will create a kml file from the directions and as you know you can open this in any GPS app,so spot on GPS plot of any google map directions
